Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) is the administration of four monthly courses of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) and amodiaquine (AQ), or SPAQ, to children between 3 and 59 months during the rainy season in the Sahel sub-region where malaria transmission is highly seasonal and the majority of clinical malaria cases (>60%) occur during a short period of 3-4 months (WHO, 2012). The objective of SMC is to maintain therapeutic antimalarial drug concentrations in the blood throughout the period of greatest risk. SMC has been shown to be safe, feasible, effective, and cost-effective for the prevention of malaria among children under five.
