Over the last decade, the world has made major progress in the fight against malaria. Since 2000, malaria mortality rates have fallen by more than 25%, and 50 of the 99 countries with ongoing transmission are now on track to meet the 2015 World Health Assembly target of reducing incidence rates by more than 75%. A major scale-up of vector control interventions, together with increased access to diagnostic testing and quality-assured treatment, has been key to this progress.

On April 25, people across the globe will take part in a wide range of activities to mark World Malaria Day 2013. These activities will no doubt look back at the remarkable progress that the global development community has made in combatting malaria and indeed other infectious diseases over the years. However, one of the key lessons other infectious disease control has shown is that when there is an opportunity to control the spread of disease, it must be taken. Therefore now is the time for the malaria community to regroup, reenergise and look ahead to “invest in the future:

Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu

 

 

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria remain major health issues in Nigeria.

Chukwu said this on Monday  in Calabar, Cross River State, in his welcome address at the Country Coordinating Mechanism Nigeria retreat held at Tinapa Knowledge Centre.

“These three diseases: HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria are still major public health issues in our country,” he said.

He also said the incidence of drug resistant TB and extremely drug resistant TB were on the increase, adding that the ministry was doing everything possible to tackle them.
