The National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) is a government body charged with coordinating the response to malaria in Nigeria towards the prevention, treatment and control. It has a mission to “free Nigerians from the scourge of Malaria through leadership and coordination in developing policies, strategies and guidelines that would ensure the delivery of high impact Malaria interventions equitably with a high sense of accountability”.
The programme has oversight over, and is coordinating the implementation of several strategic interventions including Prompt and Effective Case Management, Intermittent Preventive Treatment of malaria in pregnancy, Integrated Vector Management including Use of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs), Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and Environmental Management; Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization, Effective Programme Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, in collaboration with several Partners, for the elimination of malaria in Nigeria. NMEP has been responsible for the development and adoption of national policies and guidelines; development of training manuals; sensitization and training of health workers and stakeholders on all interventions.
With a need to improve the operational strategy at the Programme level, it is necessary to scale-up activities to ensure consolidation on previous gains while also advancing programme implementation to ensure further reduction in malaria burden towards the stated goals of the National Malaria Strategic Plan, especially over the 2018-2020 implementation period.
